Sharing a movie from iMovie to a Quick Time Movie

Follow these directions to export your finished iMovie to a file that can be shown in a large screen format.



  • in iMovie go the the word SHARE, across the top of the screen

  • go to: Export using Quick Time Movie

  • WHERE: change to DESKTOP

  • then go to the tiny arrow down to the right of the SAVE AS: section- click it- the window expands

  • then select EXPORT: Movie to Quick Time Movie

  • then give movie title making sure not to erase extension - SAVE AS: titleofmovie.mov

  • SAVE

Note- the more audio and additional features in your movie the longer it will take to crunch into a movie. This could take over 10 minutes depending on what you created.

  • in iMovie go the the word SHARE, across the top of the screen

  • go to: Export using Quick Time Movie

  • WHERE: change to DESKTOP

  • then go to the tiny arrow down to the right of the SAVE AS: section- click it- the window expands

  • then select EXPORT: Movie to MPEG-4

  • then give movie title making sure not to erase extension - SAVE AS: titleofmovie.mp4

  • SAVE
This file should export quickly- it is a small file that usually can be emailed to someone.
WARNING- it will not play in a large window without becoming very distorted. To make a large file for large window viewing look at the next entry.
